The wife is actually thinking about a pickup for having on the side, for random projects. My mom in law is also moving up from Florida, and could use a truck for the process and for similar home projects/trips to home depot. This truck is more than that, but it looks well cared for and I might be able to sell off fine accessories. Thoughts?

Yeah. Is the school of thought on these things “if it made it this far, you got a good one?” I’m not looking for a daily, except in a pinch (like now, when my VW is in the shop for carbon buildup)

High mileage first gen with 35 inch tires and the 4 cylinder? Pass, that thing will be slow as a brick and eat up gas, not to mention the additional wear of those huge tires on all the components.

honestly, thats kinda my school of thought. but then other, less wear prone things could start to wear (trans missions and diffs come to mind)
go for it if its rust free

Doug Thorny headers though!

Those alone should be good for an additional...5-10 db?

He has stock wheels to put back on, but didn’t think of the wear and tear while they were on. Thanks.

Anyone who goes through the trouble of listing all their mods should try not to misspell them in the process. Also I had Hedman Hedders on my 22re and they were good for 0-60 in 2 hours..

I have only slightly oversized tires on my land cruiser (33 vs 31.5) but even at that small disparity AND with the larger and heavier components that come with the Land Cruiser vs Tacoma I’ve already seen accelerated wear. If he’s been keeping up on bearings, chassis grease and tie rods and fluid changes it should be fine, but those little axles were never meant to push a tire that size.

22r-e - built like a tank, about as fast.

22RE; It will go forever, you won’t like it..

And that is beyond my ability to diagnose or handle. I’m stuck in that my wife wants a truck to use as a beater, and wants to pay beater prices, but didn’t want a beater....
![]() 10/27/2015 at 14:59 |

if you need a beater, check out gm. The GMT400’s are dirt cheap and they are pretty solid mechanically. If you can find a 2500 with the 5.7 vortec you are in the golden zone for reliability.

Why not have mom-in-law pick up a Tacoma in Florida where they don’t have the love tax like they do in Colorado and Washington?

Not a 22RE. a 3RZ 2.7l. The 22RE was never put in the Tacoma. Even the 2.4 in 2wd Tacomas was the new 2RZ.

I’m in DC, not Washington state, but that’s a great idea to avoid the salt they put down here...

sorry missed that. Saw Washington and the price was high, so I assumed.

Don’t let the miles scare you. We have a 267k mile Taco in our work fleet that runs like a top. What I would worry about is frame rust.

I’d go for a GM 2500 from a no-salt state.

FirstGen Flex?
![]() 10/27/2015 at 15:31 |

Yes, though I do have to add that Toyota did not make the frames, Dana did.

First gen campaign is over though, ended in 2012 so you are on your own.
Plus with all the second gens getting replace (like mine) you aren’t going to get much attention from Toyota.
